Presents and defends a rigorous definition of substance, by drawing on the notion of existential or ontological dependency. Various different species of ontological dependency are identified, including most importantly, the key relation of identity dependence. By appealing to a number of different species of dependency, an account is developed of the fundamental ontological relationships between substances and entities belonging to various other important ontological categories, such as events and properties.
