Rigorous ascetic texts from Edessa in about 370 written under the name of Makarios became associated with heretics known as Messalians. Despite their disparagement of the sacramental and ordered life of the Church, the Messalians gained the sympathy of a few bishops, including Gregory of Nyssa, and influenced some fifth‐century writers.
