This chapter examines the development of enterprise resource planning (ERP)-type technologies in organisations, and their implications for accounting. ERP-type technologies have brought about economies of speed, scope (through promotion of downstream, upstream, and sideways integration), and size (through promotion of globalisation). However, there is a limit to the efficiencies achieved. Accountants must understand the new organisational dynamics of innovation and control to maintain their organisational significance.
