A consideration of the relationship between Macarius and the Cappadocian Fathers (focussing on St Basil and St Gregory of Nyssa). A number of parallels and possible links are established in the case of Basil while a demonstrable and significant connection is explored in the shape of Nyssa’s reworking (as his De instituto Christiano) of Macarius’ Epistola magna or Great Letter. In this way, Macarius is seen to be closely associated with the Cappadocian programme of monastic reform.

Keywords: Cappadocian Fathers; De instituto Christiano; Epistola magnas; monastic reform; St Basil of Caesarea; St Gregory of Nyssa
