This essay explores the organisational structure of financial regulatory and supervisory functions. It addresses three questions arising from the issue of what the optimal institutional setup for supervisory activities should be: (a) One supervisor or many?; (b) Inside or outside the central banks?; and (c) National or European? Focus is given to Euroland, since it is the most advanced area in European integration, and will soon be enlarged, possibly leading to its coincidence with the European Union.

Keywords: financial regulation; supervision; organisational structure; financial industry; central bank; Euroland
