Although the Christian tradition has tended to highlight the church's relationship to Jesus Christ, a comprehensive theology of the church is not possible without a significant focus on the Holy Spirit. Aims at a retrieval of the Spirit's role in the church. It does this via both an exploration of the relationship between Christ and the Spirit and the theology of symbol. Most importantly, it identifies the church as the symbol of the Spirit in human history. Details the implications of understanding the church in the light of the Spirit; this involves a focus on the church's communion as well as its mission and on the qualities of the church included in the ancient Christian creeds: unity; holiness; catholicity; apostolicity.
