This chapter analyses leadership as an essential part of the party competition. It argues that the incentive created by the prospect of having to fight future elections is weaker in parties that have a strong leader. In such cases, voters are more likely to rely on screening. In response, parties select as their leaders politicians whom voters are likely to regard as trustworthy.
