It is widely held that in Republic 8, Plato acknowledges the occurrence within appetite of conflicts, in which it desires something or other and at the same time is averse to the thing in question. It is also believed by many that in the same book, Plato implicitly ascribes to appetite the capacity for means-end reasoning. In showing that both of these views are mistaken, the interpretation of Republic-style soul-partition set out in Chapter 2 is defended.
