This chapter discusses the development of environmental epidemiology. The current trend is towards progressively larger hypothesis-based studies to increase statistical power and the sensitivity to detect causal associations. Assessment of causality has taken advantage over the proper use of multivariate analysis in studies measuring a relatively large number of potential confounders.
