This chapter attempts to organize the information obtained to date, concerning the properties and possible physiological roles of the various ion channels which contribute to maintaining the resting membrane potential, and to activating vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) as summarized previously. The effects of vasodilators are discussed in less detail. Emphasis is placed upon electrophysiological studies at the cellular or single channel level.

Keywords: membrane ion channels; vascular smooth muscle; vascular smooth muscle cell; membrane potential; vasodilators
