A vast array of agonists regulate smooth muscle function by interacting with specific receptors located upon the cell membrane. This results in the activation of intracellular signalling pathways and the formation of a number of key second messengers. This chapter reviews recent studies implicating a role for protein kinase C (PKC) and tyrosine kinase pathways in regulating smooth muscle contraction and the involvement of cyclic nucleotide generating systems in relaxation.
