Codes of ethics go back to the origins of medicine and the best known is the Hippocratic Oath. Many more codes and ‘declarations’ emerged in the second half of the 20th century. Codes offer broad ethical frameworks for different aspects of medical and nursing practice and research, but codes have limitations and many ethical issues slip through the wide mesh of codes.
