This chapter presents a 1990 commentary on bioengineering. It argues that we are busily engaged in manipulating our biological foundations, as evidenced by the biological control exercised over human reproduction. It calls for a need to distinguish between scientific activity (the search for understanding in matters concerning human procreation) and medical engineering (the application of that new knowledge in the form of antenatal and neonatal interventions).
