The six Weimar include one melody chorale, three chorale canons, and two pieces that defy strict classification. They are distinguished from the early and middle chorales not only by a strong inclination toward canonic writing (especially at the fifth between the upper two voices), but also by textures thicker than four parts and by the placement of the chorale tune in voices other than the soprano. These traits suggest that Bach wished to broaden the compositional style of the Orgelbüchlein. Many other Orgelbüchlein chorales, of course, contain manual voices based on the stepwise suspirans, but since the stepwise motion is generally unidiomatic on a pedal board, the pedal either states a completely different movie or, as in Vers 3 of “Christ isterstanden”, a different from the suspirans.
