This chapter recognizes and correlates the effects of change that are external to the company but which significantly influence its internal responses and value. These influences act primarily through the industrial structure. Thus, a major integrating contribution of this chapter is the formalization of the role of industrial structure and dynamics. These dynamics are shown both to affect the constraints on the corporation's ability to respond to policy shifts and, in turn, to be affected by the responses of particular corporations. It also provides a framework for predicting such changes and for managing the individual function areas so as to protect corporate flexibility and value from the effects of unexpected policy changes.
