This chapter provides a detailed theoretical discussion of various source-field models and their mathematical basis. It develops expressions for electric sources of bioelectric origin. These sources are generated by the passage of current across the membrane of active (excitable) cells, which may be either nerve or muscle. It considers excitable tissue with very simple models — mainly single cylindrical fibers. It can be seen that bioelectric sources can be described as surface/volume distributions of two types of source element, namely the monopole and/or dipole. Because of the fundamental importance of the monopole and dipole source, the chapter first proceeds to a description of the fields generated by each.
