This chapter discusses a set of policies and politically feasible strategies that have the potential to significantly reduce the likelihood and severity of impoverishment. These strategies flow from the new paradigm and are linked to the diagnoses of poverty found in the preceding chapters. They include the creation of adequately paying jobs, increasing the accessibility of several key public goods, buffering the economic consequences of family change, building individual and community assets, and providing a sensible safety net. In combination, they are designed to reduce both the short- and longer-term risk of poverty.
