Consciousness is a supremely functional adaptation that, like other major biological adaptations, appears to have many uses. Consciousness also has as many functions, perhaps as many as theaters do. This chapter explores a tentative list. It discusses the role of consciousness in creating new priorities, in problem solving, decision making, controlling actions, and learning and adaptation.
