This chapter shows how measuring the rate and pattern of licking within a meal of liquid food, rather than measuring only the total volume ingested, enriches the investigation of satiation. It is revealed in this microstructural analysis the time during a meal in which conditioned and unconditioned satiating mechanisms act. The analysis has also measured the potency of these mechanisms. The chapter attempts to show that with the technology now available it is possible to go beyond meal size as a measure of the effect of experimental manipulations on ingestive behavior and gain a better insight into the nature of the controls that determine the size of the meal.
