The image of Mary, mother of Jesus, appears very large in Qur'anic scripture, scriptural exegesis, and popular Muslim piety. In the Qur'an, Mary is the only woman identified by the name, and her name appears more frequently in the Qur'anic text than in the New Testament. Her name is also the title of Qur'anic Sura (Sura 19). From birth she was surrounded by miracles of divine favor. She received the angelic annunciation of a child from God's spirit, whose name was Christ Jesus, chosen to be one of God's righteous prophets. And the Qur'anic revelation cites Mary as “an example for the believers” because of her chastity, faith, and obedience.
