This chapter looks at the life of Josephine and her faithfully kept diary since her early teens. Josephine came from a wealthy and powerful family in Texas. At the age of sixteen or seventeen she married Jack Lewis, a travelling salesman but the marriage didn't last long because of Josephineɧs urges to liberate herself from the Cogdell family. Josephine moved to California to continue her education and had a brief fling there. In 1921, she moved to San Francisco and there she met John Garth and fell in love with him. But after five years, their relationship reached an emotional nadir and this forced them to separate. By then she had met George Schuyler and he became her lover.
