Barbershop quartet singing played no small part in American culture and this has caused some historians to look at the barbershop music as a fusion of both black and white contributions and other such racial issues that may have come about in the earlier periods. Barbershop harmony, as an icon and as a relevant element of pop culture, is seen here as a product of American race relations as it veers away from traditional German and Austrian music. The aesthetic of barbershop music, as it was rooted in amateurism, has developed much after undergoing revival and other modifications through time. Through looking at and comparing all the different versions of barbershop quartets that have come up throughout the years, we are able to distinguish how the barbershop quartet as an institution is easily influenced and changed.
