This chapter addresses the question of what defective brain regions may contribute to schizophrenia. Of special interest are the various cognitive abilities termed “executive” functions that associate with the prefrontal part of the brain. These functions are a major scientific puzzle on their own, quite apart from any involvement with schizophrenia. The chapter then reviews what is known about the frontal lobes and considers evidence that bears on the idea that a defective frontal brain is a necessary component of schizophrenia.
