Analysis of Rates

This chapter discusses methods for testing hypotheses comparing two or more rates, testing for trend, and combining rates over different strata. These methods are directly analogous to methods for analyzing proportions seen in Chapter 3. The chapter also discusses direct and indirect methods for calculating summary rates. Either method could be used to give a reasonable summary of a common multiplicative effect, although the indirect method required an additional assumption that the standard rates also conform to the same underlying multiplicative model. Exercises are provided at the end of the chapter.
