Ambrose Bierce was again in the winter of San Francisco for the second time in five years—jobless, adrift, and greatly depressed. His hopes of returning to Argonaut were quickly dashed when he was visited in his remote new hillside home at Fort Mason by his former colleague Jerome Hart, who informed Bierce that he was no longer needed in the publication. However, an opening had arisen on Wasp. Bierce was offered the job of being an editor in January 1881 and began to appear weekly in the newspaper. Bierce fitted in with Wasp as it was a Democratic organ.
