This chapter explains how to conduct a comprehensive and exhaustive search for the information that will be used in a systematic review, decision analysis, or cost-effectiveness analysis. An overall strategy is first described followed by a description of computerized searches of MEDLINE. Limitations of computerized searches are identified. The chapter defines publication bias and how publication bias can be avoided and detected. The funnel plot as a way to detect publication bias is described and then critically evaluated.
