This chapter attempts to ferret out Athanasian aretology, relying principally on Athanasius's duplex treatise Contra Gentes (CG) and De Incarnatione Verbi (DI). This work is especially helpful, since it was written before the bishop became embroiled in rancorous controversies. Here we hear Athanasius speaking pastorally, expounding a basic theme of patristic thought: Christianity returns us to the beauty, truth, and goodness of God, and to our proper immortal and incorruptible identity. His Third Discourse Against the Arians is also used as it explains this vision.
