The pastoral function of doctrine emerges from this study as an aid in cultivating a skilled and excellent life. The testimonies from the nine expositors are gathered up by questioning them about the nature and task of doctrine as they developed and refined it. The goal is to construct a narrative of the functions of doctrine into which our latter-day notion of doctrine fits. The questions posed are: (1) What understanding of theology is at work here? Who is its audience? (2) What is the function of doctrine? (3) What are the operative doctrines being articulated? (4) How does the author frame the issue he or she is working on? The questions are put to each group of writers by historical period and then a narrative is elicited to get a better grasp of the principles they followed in the housekeeping of the theological life of the church.
