This chapter reviews evidence that shows an alternative reason why monkeys with lesions in the middle of sulcus principals (area 46) fail delayed-response tasks: they may fail, not because they do not remember what they have seen, but because they are impaired at selecting among items in memory. The impairment on delayed response may occur at the stage of response selection.
