This introductory chapter offers an overview of the history of the over-exploitation of natural resources in the Philippines, the political context, and the role of the Catholic Church in the environmental movement at local level. It argues that the Philippines and many developing countries need an environmentalism which treats the conservation of natural resources as both an ecological and economic problem; which is appropriate for their particular ecosystems; and which addresses entrenched poverty, weak governance, and the implications of unequal land ownership.
