Castlehaven has a bit-part in history of the early Stuart age, a modest place in early modern literary studies, and a starring role in most histories of male homosexuality in England. The name 2nd Earl of Castlehaven is associated with a notoriety the origins of which seemed axiomatic. The case that is presented offers a story of sex, privilege, corruption, and revenge, and in each of those realms, it also offers a story about social tensions and the misappropriation of authority.

Keywords: 2nd Earl of Castlehaven; sex; law; privilege; corruption; revenge
