This chapter continues the review of hippocampal function in memory by presenting complementary evidence from approaches that involve monitoring the ongoing operation of the human hippocampus and related brain structures during memory performance, providing a virtual “window” into the inner workings of the normal brain. This is accomplished at two levels of analysis: by using functional neuroimaging methods in normal humans and by recording the activity patterns of single neurons in animals.
