Lionel Hampton's 1953 European tour was his first overseas tour, but he followed a pattern that he had established well before and continued with for decades to come. The band was a well-organized machine whose music was carefully targeted to please an audience that had grown up on the Jazz at the Philharmonic formula of Norman Granz. Hampton had of course made jazz history with Benny Goodman some fifteen years before. His small group recordings with Goodman alone would have been sufficient to ensure his reputation. When Clifford Brown began playing alongside Art Farmer on the European tour, Hampton gleefully prodded the young boppers by pitting them against each other on stage. The band toured a number of countries in Europe, including Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, and France.
