This chapter corrects the Western tradition that the proposition of the exclusively Western “Athanasian” Creed, “Such as the Father is, so is the Son, and so is the Spirit,” with the rhetorically impressive specifications that follow, must be understood of equality in deity, not of identity in deity. The distinction between the triune story as it is about God and as it is about creatures is not a distinction between the simplicity of timelessness and the differentiations of temporality: eventful differentiation is real on both sides.
