This chapter is divided into three parts. The first part states that music is an object and then states that music is not an object at all; it is a mood, an ambience, an environment, and is mostly used to that end. This idea contrasts strongly to the way music is regarded by professional musicians. The second part talks about how classical music aspires to condition the thought as it embodies the basic categories of thought. This can be rephrased as the differentiation of its materials and their discursive development within a logical sequence. The final part talks about the limitations of classical music. Music does not just take place in time or duration but in its patterns of repetition, transformation, recall, and anticipation. Classical music deals with the process of subjectivity more than in the definition of any single static identity.
