This chapter explores why some groups or organizations are better than others at learning from experience. It discusses factors found to facilitate or impede the rate at which groups and organizations learn. It pays particular attention to the role of experience and examines whether certain patterns of experience are more conducive to group or organizational learning than others. Thus, the chapter aims to address an important unanswered question about organizational learning identified in recent reviews of learning at the organizational, intraorganizational, and inter-organizational levels of analysis: Which patterns of experience are most conducive to organizational learning?
