This chapter focuses on the Alia musica, one of the most complex and perplexing of all medieval writings on music. Alia musica is actually a core treatise with succeeding layers of commentary on it, the commentators themselves drawing their material from various sources. Among the many questions that still surround the Alia musica are those of authorship and date. It is argued that there are five different conceptual “layers” of the treatise, and that there were at least four authors or commentators involved in the creation of the work.
