This chapter reviews cutting-edge technologies that are likely to be pivotal to health system development and to influence the generation and use of health statistics as the 21st century unfolds. It highlights four areas of future technological development: information and communications technology, genomics, personal health technology, and nanotechnology. It is impossible to be certain if these technologies will develop as anticipated. However, it is certain that at least some of them will transform both the nature of health-care delivery and the field of health statistics.
