The literature on dissociation provides many opportunities for clarification and analysis. This chapter offers a criterion for attributing dissociation that corrects lacunae and errors in the standard definitions. Using that analysis, it critiques the debate over whether dissociation constitutes one or several distinct phenomena, and comments on its apparent significance for philosophical assertions about the unity of the self.
