This chapter presents Reich's thoughts about the contributions of John Cage. He expresses his appreciation for the integrity and consistency of Cage as a person. It has also been suggested that Cage's early works laid the groundwork for the kind of music Reich wrote in the 1960s and early '70s. But since Reich never studied Cage's early works, they had no conscious influence on his music.
