This chapter presents Reich's thoughts about Triple Quartet. Triple Quartet exists in three versions: one for string quartet and pre-recorded tape, another for three string quartets (12 players), and a third for part of an orchestral string section (36 players). The initial inspiration for the piece comes from the last movement of Bartók's Fourth Quartet. While no musical material is taken from that of Bartók, its energy was Reich's starting point.
