Show Summary Details

This chapter deals with the morphology of oligodendrocytes. The first section reviews current findings on the morphology of oligodendrocytes and discusses these findings in the context of the classical work by Rio–Hortega. The second section examines the functional significance of oligodendrocyte polymorphism, and the third deals with the environmental and axonal factors that are likely to control the differentiation of oligodendrocyte phenotypes. In the fourth section, recent findings on the functions of adult oligodendrocyte progenitors (OPCs) are assessed.

Keywords: morphology; Rio Horgeta; oligodendrocyte polymorphism; adult oligodendrocyte progenitors
