On a warm summer evening, June 28, 1998, the Birds celebrated their 70th anniversary with a grand dinner and roast coordinated by Ira Tucker, Jr., at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The tributes were fitting and heartfelt. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Birds had moved forward, weathering difficulties and disappointments, reaching further milestones, and finally pushing through to the 21rst century when their continuity as a group would finally come into question.
