Transgenic crops have been grown very little in Europe where they are most controversial, and grown most in the US where they are generally accepted as safe. Since the first environmental release in 1988, over 38 trillion genetically modified plants have been grown in US soil (through 2003). Scientific studies are reviewed to better understand the real environmental impacts and to differentiate fact from fiction in this contentious field.
