In this chapter the unit of analysis is the school as a whole. Students' responses are aggregate to describe their schools. The chapter examines the variability between schools with regard to a number of key variables. Key findings and implications include the following: (1) very few schools have high levels of severe violence; (2) the more severe the violence is, the more skewed the distribution of schools. For instance, in about a quarter of schools there were no reports of students cutting with a knife, half the schools had less than 5 percent reporting this; in 5 percent of schools, 20 percent or more of the students reported being cut with a knife; and in 1 percent of schools, over 25 percent of students reported being cut. These patterns suggest that policy and resources against severe violence should be centered at a small number of the most problematic schools, whereas to address the less severe violence, the whole school system should be targeted.
