This chapter introduces some of the basic principles that are common to the different regions of the brain. It shows that it is possible to identify fundamental types of synaptic circuits at successive levels of organization. These types are called basic, or canonical, circuits. The canonical operations that the circuits perform are described. This provides a conceptual framework for understanding the adaptations of these operations that are unique to each of the regions considered in subsequent chapters.
