This chapter presents defensive behavior as a functional behavior system, describes the neural substrates of many of the various defensive behaviors described, and presents a model that integrates the behavioral and neural organizations of defensive behavior. The functional mapping of behavioral organization onto a network of brain structures has provided an invaluable and productive framework for generating testable hypotheses of the effects of experimental manipulations and may be beginning to inform studies of the substrates of clinical disorders related to dysfunction of defensive behavior in people.
