This chapter presents the author’s attempt as a historian to read critically a few central biographies of two musicians in order to address the question of how musicians responded to the changes around them. Had musicians just accepted these changes? Had they resisted them? Were they indifferent to the efforts of musicologists? Could they simply ignore Paluskar and dismiss Bhatkhande? Rather than viewing musicians as artists who lived in their own worlds, transcending the hubbub of everyday political activity, it views them as actors in the world who negotiated the forces of the modern in order to ensure the survival of their musical traditions.
