This section presents a translation of the supplementary revelations, known in Latin as Revelationes extravagantes. For a number of reasons these texts were omitted from the central corpus of the canonization edition. This loosely defined body of materials includes draft chapters of the monastic rule and many fragmentary biographical details relating to St. Birgitta’s life. Some texts are obscure, and others potentially controversial. There are also key revelations that shed light on the recording of the visions. As a collection this is an important source for understanding the process of transmission of the revelations, the more so because they were subject to a lesser degree of moderation by Birgitta’s confessors than most other revelations. They are the raw expression of her thoughts as she struggles to articulate her visions in words, and arguably in this book the authentic voice of the saint can be heard most distinctly.
