Beyond Belief

Show Summary Details

This chapter profiles the three types of students whose educational beliefs differ according to racial and ethnic ideology. These students are the so-called cultural mainstreamers, the noncompliant believers and the cultural straddlers. This chapter examines how these students' racial and ethnic identities, specifically their beliefs about assimilation, shape their orientations toward schools. It explains that all these students believed education to be critical to success but they approached schooling differently because of the variation in their racial ideologies.
